Superette

1. Superette
She was once a cashier
Working down at Sully's South Side Superette.
Number seven register, beside the magazines
Was where they met.
Three years out of high school, and a little boy at home,
Livin' with her mom for now she said.
Working down at Sully's was a temporary thing, she
Always knew where she would rather be instead,
Inside her head.
Twenty years away from her,
He stands in line and waits upon her smile.
When she rings his groceries,
He lingers in the small talk for awhile.
In between the weather and the clever small clichés
He thinks he may hear something more profound.
And when he leaves he takes her vision home inside his head
Where he can make believe his time has come around,
And he has found
Love in a superette.
3. One Last Time
Death walked in one night without warning,
Didn't have to tell me his name.
Walked him to my table, offered him my whiskey
Just the same.
We talked about the world and all its pleasure;
Talked about my life and all its pain.
And through an open window
I could hear the traffic whining
In the rain.
I wondered if he ever was mistaken,
If there was something more that I could do.
The moon broke through the clouds and I was shaken,
I just wanted to be with you
One last time.
Sometimes you can see your life so clearly;
The things that you regret come shining through.
And even though I've loved this world so dearly,
I would give it all to be with you
One last time.
5. Twilight Zone
Life
Don’t seem worth living
When you’re all alone
In the twilight zone
Of romance
Where no love can find you
And you feel like you’ve blown your last chance.
You remember
That December
The dying ember
Of your heart’s desperate last dance.
Don’t
Call me at midnight
There’s no telephone
In the twilight zone
Of remorse.
And don’t look for solace
In places and faces
Where love’s run its course.
You will forget her
In time memory fades
But for now you must let her
Walk away with your heart
While the day slowly fades
Into the shadows of twilight.
7. I'm Not Your Fool
Well I was just a fool,
To think you ever cared,
You were using me, abusing me, everyday.
I gave you my heart.
You took it and tore me apart.
But I loved you so,
I kept running back for more.
And every time you hurt me, you hurt me
Worse than before.
Why can’t I see you don’t love me
And can never, never, never
Give me what I need.
You call out my name,
And I run like a moth to the flame.
But I’m not your fool.
I can’t be here anymore.
You hurt me for the last time, the last time
You walked out my door.
I ain’t got time for a woman
Who don’t love me, and never
Never did at all.
9. Pointless Conversation
Another pointless conversation
Nothing ventured, nothing gained;
Just one more destination
On a going nowhere train.
Running from the pain.
They met each other on the highway,
The setting sun behind them shone.
It just seemed easier, to become partners
Pretending they were not alone,
And way too far from home.
Lay me in a sunlit garden,
Let me sleep away the fear.
You ask me if I’m sad,
She was all I had
I watched her slowly disappear.
They headed East from Colorado
Blinded by the rising sun.
A thousand miles to go, before they came around
To where the journey had begun.
They weren’t fooling anyone.
11. When You Go
When you go, / I won’t miss you at all
‘Cause I know / You’ll be here in the fall
Of the snow / And in songs
From a long time ago.
Far away, / You’ll be humming a tune
You can’t play / To a bright orange moon
On the bay; / you’ll remember the words
Day by day.
And you’ll be free / To find whatever promise
That could be / Where other shores pretend to meet
Another sea, /And other faces keep reminding you of me.
You will hear / Voices whisper softly in your ear
That I’m near.
When you go, / It won’t matter to me
‘Cause you grow / Like the flowers I see
Through the snow. / And I won’t shed a tear
When you go.
2. Suspicion
You promised me the open sky
If I would be the one who loved you.
Saw you with another guy
Took the light from the stars above you.
He was just a boy from high school you hardly even knew
At least that’s what you told me, and I took it as the truth.
The worst thing you can do to love is wonder if it’s true,
That’s my suspicion.
On the street the other day
Saw you with a girl she was a dancer.
Who she was you wouldn’t say,
But I already knew the answer.
Now every time I see you talk with someone new
I just go crazy thinking they’re in love with you.
Feel like I’m insane, what am I gonna do
With my suspicion?
Love is really sweet they say,
Nothing that you can really hold onto.
You’re gonna watch it slip away,
Even if you don’t want to.
A wiff of something nameless you can’t quite compehend,
The way she turns away before the conversation ends.
How can we be lovers, we can’t connect as friends
Without suspicion?
4. Bitter Teardrops
Gotta get outta here,
No one's coming to your rescue.
Jesus made a deal
With the devil sent to test you.
Churches filled to overflowing,
Prayers are rising to the sun.
Can you hear them?
Or am I the only one
Who can't believe you
Would sacrifice your precious sons?
Gotta get outta here,
No one's coming to redeem us.
We're burning bridges now,
Ocean's widening between us.
Flags are flying from the mountains,
Bombs are flying from the sky
Like bitter teardrops.
And people wonder why
We cannot save them,
We can only hear them cry.
6. Another Heartache Country Song
There was a time, he thought he was fine
And in love with the world all around.
She was the reason he walked with his feet
Never touching the ground.
She liked to say that she loved him.
He liked to think it was so
He was happy, it seems
Like a long time ago
There came a day, she tried to say
She felt angry, hurt and alone.
He tried to help her but every word pulled her
Under, like a stone,
She never said she was leaving.
She never told him good-bye.
Now he’s out there just waiting,
Wondering why.
He should’a known, true love won’t grow
In a garden left too long.
All it’ll give you is just another
Heartache country song.
She always said that she loved him.
He always knew it was so.
8. Sweet Dreams
It isn’t that she cares to know how anybody feels
They never even call her on the phone.
She sits in her apartment with her Dago Mountain Red,
Says she’s rather face the truth alone.
Sweet dreams and sorrow
Take her anywhere she has to go.
She lives in tomorrow,
Today is just too difficult to know.
All her friends are married now, their babies have all grown,
A few have even died or moved away.
It doesn’t really matter if they come or if they go,
They never really knew her anyway.
Sweet dreams and sorrow
Color all the music that she hears.
She’d beg, steal or borrow
To find her way back through the years.
Another year has come and gone, another lonely night,
She picks her rumpled housecoat off the floor,
There’s still another bottle waiting, still another dream,
If she can only make it out the door.
Sweet dreams and sorrow
Have taken her as far as she can go.
There’ll be no tomorrow…
10. Love Is A Liar
Be careful what you ask for when you’re lonely.
You just might get the thing that you desire.
People come, people go
And you can never really know
Who’ll pull you down, and who will take you higher.
Love is a liar.
A woman is a wonderful invention
Born in hell and tempered in the fire.
She’ll give you everything you need,
Cut your heart and watch you bleed
And leave you in a puddle of desire.
Love is a liar.
Stand on the corner
Heed what they say:
She will steal your heart and throw your love away
Like child’s play.
But you’ll still want her anyway.
Be careful how you spend your hard earned money.
And stay away from women who require
First your body, they your soul,
You’ll give up every last control
And beg for mercy while she lights the fire.
Love is a liar.
12. Your Eyes
Your eyes
Explore his trembling heart
And see
Where the Universe began
And he
Takes your hand
And holds your heart
With his mind
And in your eyes
He sees the universe
Rewind.

Mistaken

1. Talk To Me
We were contented
To go on living in this masquerade.
Love was invented
To pull away the veil from the mistakes we’ve made.
You were a vision
Sent from somewhere deep inside my fevered brain.
When love came slowly into view
It was all I could do just to make myself know it was you.
Talk to me.
Tell me all the wonders that you see.
Time is revealing
Lessons that we never thought we’d need to know.
Love is for healing
What the heart encounters on its lonely road.
You were the answer
To every prayer I threw into the empty sky.
Like a bird floating on the wind,
You were there, and the end seemed a wonderful place to begin.
Talk to me.
Tell me all the wonders we will see
When the world is made all fresh and new
And I will be in love with you again.
Won’t you please talk to me.
Talk to me.
3. Midnight Angel
She was just a midnight angel on the road to self-destruction
and disgrace,
She wore skin-tight leather Levis and a lot of black
Mascara on her face,
She came upon him unawares, he didn't have a chance,
Put him on a roller coaster, taught him how to dance
Before he knew what happened he was caught up
in a rip tide romance.
They drove all the way to Tucson Arizona in a stolen Chevrolet.
It was all that he could to stay awake; she kept him
running night and day.
Robbed a grocery store in Mobile; a bank in Tennessee,
He was just the lookout, but he saw what he could see,
It scared him just a little, but it also made him feel like he was free.
Midnight angel, midnight angel, rescue me
In a bar outside El Paso she was caught between a pistol
and a knife
When the smoke cleared they were running,
and he knew that she had taken someone’s life.
They ran into a roadblock on the road to Mexico,
She got out a window, but he was much too slow,
Now he’s down in Huntsville on the lookout for an
angel on death row.
Now all you Barca-Lounge banditos,
all you ageing hippie rock star wannabes,
Take a lesson from this story, or the fantasy will drive
you to your knees.
You can see it in the movies; you can watch it on TV,
You can even make believe that it was you they came to see,
But if you ever run across another midnight angel, let her be.
Midnight angel, midnight angel, set me free.
5. Mistaken
He loved to take her photograph;
Made him smile to see her laugh.
He knew his love was True.
His friends all said that she was wrong,
Much too young and much too strong
To feel the same way too.
He knew they were mistaken;
She spoke a different truth.
She was the answer
To everything he never learned in school.
It was easy to mistake her for a dancer,
And easier to take him for a fool.
They broke the rules, broke some hearts,
Slept together, slept apart,
It was a rocky ride.
Then one day she had enough,
Looked around and saw that there
Was nothing left inside.
How could he be mistaken?
How could love be so cruel?
There was no dancer
And no exception to the rule:
When you look to your illusions for the answer,
It’s easy to be taken for a fool.
7. Elvis' Underpants
Winging on down to Cleveland
Nothin' on my mind,
Coming down for the wedding vows
Of a friend of mine.
But that'll only take an hour or two,
Leaves a whole lotta time to kill.
Don't wanna be hanging 'round no hotel
Running up a porn channel bill.
I hear they got a rock 'n roll museum here,
And I'll probably only get one chance
To see the Big Bopper's pink pajamas,
And Elvis's underpants.
Elvis, oh Elvis, you left us a great legacy.
Cleveland, oh Cleveland,
You build a great shrine to the King's BVDs.
Now, Drew Cary he says that Cleveland rocks,
And them people really know how to dance.
But nothin ' can compare to the feelin' you get
When you see Elvis's underpants.
Elvis, oh Elvis, you left us a great legacy.
Cleveland, oh Cleveland, you saved the King's undies for posterity.
Now if you ever find yourself in Cleveland,
And you’re lookin’ for the sights to see,
Get yourself right over to the Erie shore
And that steel and glass menagerie.
Just ask for directions to the Hall of Fame,
And no matter what your circumstance,
You’ll revel in the power and the glory of
Elvis’s underpants.
9. Thin Air
I tried to tell you it was over,
You were underneath a different star.
You looked so helpless, like the child
That you are.
You said we'd always be together,
You said that love was all we need.
The more you cried, the more I struggled to be free.
Did you even see me?
Did you know that I was there?
Or were you building castles in thin air?
It wasn't me who made you angry.
It wasn't love you thought you found.
You heard a song and felt a memory
Come around.
The prince and princess there were dancing;
The moonlight fell through silver air.
You sat there watching in the darkness of a prayer.
Did you even see me?
Did you know that I was there?
You were building castles in thin air
11. Broken Promises
Seems like only yesterday
In a world so young, so far away,
You and I made promises.
It was so much sweeter then,
Making love, then making love again;
It was all a dream.
Now I'm trying to remember
What might be better to forget.
Was it me or you
Broke the dream in two?
And yet, I bet
If we had it all again
We'd just spend it trying to pretend
It was just a game.
Nothing special, nothing real,
No one ever asking what's the deal
With these broken promises.
Now I'm trying to remember
What might be better to forget.
I still see you there
In the corner chair...
It's true, It's you...
Made it so much sweeter then,
Making love, then making love again;
It was all a dream.
2. Just Another Jim
Jimmy was a lonely boy
'Til he met Joleen.
Taller by an inch and twice as pretty
As any girl he'd ever seen,
Stole his heart
And took him on a bus down to the city.
They lived above a liquor store,
It was very nice.
He drove a cab and she became a model.
He came home from work one day,
She was gone,
He went downstairs and climbed inside a bottle.
She was everything to him;
He was just another Jim.
He saw her on the street one day,
Tried to say hello,
Her Gucci bag and cell phone made him stammer.
He watched her climb into a cab,
Pull away,
Grabbed his heart and threw it in the slammer.
She was everything to him;
He was just another Jim.
Jimmy's still a lonely boy
Can't forget Joleen
Thirty years have passed, and he's still single.
He sits there by the phone and thinks
One day soon
He'll pick it up and give that girl a jingle.
She was everything to him;
He was just another Jim.
4. Believer
If ever I saw a believer, I saw one in you.
I couldn't wait 'til I had you alone in my room.
You had a vision of Heaven that I couldn't see.
Looking for something to say
To keep me from slipping away
At the first light of day.
You told me you prayed for a lover that you could believe.
You took off your dress by the window, and I couldn't breathe.
And all my resistance was lost in the fall of your hair.
Wearing your heart on your sleeve,
Finding the courage to free
A believer in me.
6. Replaceable
I saw you standing on a ticket line,
Thought you came to hear me play.
You didn’t even know the name of the band;
It was just another way to waste a day.
And in the end it was inevitable,
I fell in love with you
Made me feel insatiable,
Replaceable, and blue.
Another item on the social page
For all our social climber friends.
Funny how we fall from grace so easy.
Funny how the story ends.
Not with a whimper, or even a bang,
You just light another cigarette.
You still feel insatiable,
You tell yourself you have no regrets.
You may have been replaceable,
But you’re impossible to forget.
8. Gospel
If you want absolution
Got to rely on the Lord.
It don't take much surrender,
Just all that you can afford.
Take your hands out of your pockets.
Pick your dreams up off the floor.
You can dance around with obvious abandon
‘Cause that preacher he don’t live here any more.
If you listen to Jesus,
You won't have to reap what you sow.
If you listen to Elvis,
It’s all pay as you go.
Take your mind out of the gutter,
Take your love up on the roof.
Take the time to read between the lines of reason
And believe that in your heart you know the truth.
Put your money on the horses,
Take a ride to Timbuctu,
Let the rain fall down and wash away the feeling
That you can’t be saved no matter what you do.
No one gets into Heaven
Until we all get there too.
So take care of your brother.
It’s the least you can do.
10. Already Dead
Went to the Ph.D. doctor
Said please examine my head
He gave me his learned opinion
I was already dead.
Told him I'd pray for a lifetime
Bleed 'til the heavens turned red
But God saves His gifts for the living
And I was already dead.
That's what I said.
Life was once a feeling
Of pleasure and pain.
Man can burn in the dessert sun
And drown in the jungle rain.
Don't need no second opinion,
No need to cower in dread.
I got no need to fear dying,
‘Cause I’m already dead.
You heard what I said.
Lazarus and Jesus
The story is told
Both were dead and walked again
Just thirty-three years old.
A blind man having a vision,
A dancer chained to a bed;
Where can they find absolution,
When they’re already dead?
You heard what I said.
You're already dead.
12. Run To You
I would never say goodbye
I wouldn't leave you, couldn't leave you if I tried
'Cause I know yours was the only love that's true
And I run to you.
Mountains may crumble, rivers run dry,
There's no ocean, like the ocean of tears
I would cry if I thought that we were through
And I could not run to you.
It's not easy, when you're all alone
To find a reason to carry on.
You keep on searching deep inside yourself
For what went wrong.
I searched a lifetime, turned every stone,
I've been searching,
I've been searchin' for some way to come home,
Now with the shadows turning blue
I run to you.
